So, why do you need an agent?

As you know, there have been many situations where an athlete has negotiated a contract or an endorsement deal without an agent or with a family member serving as an agent.  This type of representation is clearly in the minority.  In some cases of self representation or family representation, the athlete received a rewarding contract or endorsement but in other cases, however, a good agent could have improved the deal that was agreed upon.  The expertise and advice from an agent can be extremely helpful at times.  Consider the situation faced by an NBA free agent or by a new draft pick.  An agent is generally needed to understand the complex NBA salary cap, to determine the true market value of the player, and to negotiate with the team in order to obtain that athlete's market value.
